Samuel Johnson reveals Molly's miracle recovery

The nation has been hoping and praying that music industry icon Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum would make it through his latest health crisis after a fall in Thailand – and the good news is the star appears to be on the road to recovery.

That’s the word from Samuel Johnson – who won Australia’s hearts with his portrayal of the 73-year-old icon in the hit mini-series Molly – with the actor even joking the fall may have done the icon some good!

‘The weird thing about Molly is that, after his first fall [from a ladder at his Melbourne home in 2011], he stopped umming and aahing,’ said Sam, 38, in an interview last week.

‘After his second fall, I was chatting with him on the phone and he sounded 30 years younger! ‘I said: “You’ve gotta keep falling over! Because after you fall over, it’s the only time I can understand what you’re saying!”

When Molly took a nasty fall in Bangkok while exiting a taxi just days before Channel Seven’s mini-series went to air, many feared it could end up being a tribute to a life cut short.

Fortunately, Molly’s latest spill has proved another lucky escape, with the star narrowly avoiding doing permanent damage to his spinal cord, which could have resulted in paralysis.

With as many as 2.6 million people tuning in to watch Molly around the country, the show garnered nothing but rave reviews for his portrayer, Samuel, who gave an uncanny performance as the former Countdown host.

‘We absolutely smashed it. I’m pleased for everyone involved and to have played a small part in it,’ he said to KIIS FM’s 3pm Pick-Up with Meshel Laurie and Katie ‘Monty’ Dimond.

‘It’s a big win for a team that worked really hard on it, so it feels pretty good.’
