Kate Winslet settles age-old Titanic debate

Kate Winslet has finally addressed the long-running debate that her character, Rose, let Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Jack, die.

In one of the final scenes in Titanic, Rose and Jack are left in the freezing water after the ship sinks. Rose clambers aboard a door to stay afloat while Jack freezes to death in the icy waters.

Fans of the film have since pointed out that there was more than enough room for both Rose and Jack to fit on the door - leaving Jack to die an unnecessary death.

At last, the actress made the shocking admission on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show that Jack could have been saved.

'There was plenty of room on the raft,' said US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel.

The award-winning actress replied: 'I know, I know. I agree, I think he could have actually fitted on that bit of door.'

Titanic director James Cameron defended his reasoning behind Jack's fate.

'When Jack puts Rose on the raft, he tries to get on the raft — he’s not an idiot, he doesn’t want to die — and the raft sinks; it kind of flips,' he said.

'It’s clear that there’s really only enough buoyancy available for one person, so he makes the decision to let her be that person.'
