Congratulations on getting on the X Factor - how did you find the whole experience?
The whole thing was a big growing experience, you know. It's not like I came into it not knowing what I'd be up against. But it's a force to be reckoned with and I had a lot of fun in the experience.

Had you been a fan of the show before you went on it?
I always enjoyed watching the auditions. I never watched it all the way up to the live shows, though, I only ever watched the auditions.

So what made you decide to audition?
It was the kind of Chris Isaak and James Blunt in the line-up. That was one of the swaying things. And I figured it was an opportunity to get my name out there a little bit, make some good contacts and then once it's all done I'll get back on the road and play some original music.

How did you feel when you were eliminated?
I was a little disappointed, I was hoping to get a little bit further. But at the same time, you know, I couldn't really be much happier. I still made it there, I got a free trip to London just for signing four songs, that's pretty crazy!

Do you think Chris' song choice had anything to do with your elimination?
No, no, no, no - not at all! I don't put any blame on Chris there. I was the one who arranged the song, that arrangement was completely mine and, you know what? I'm happy that I did it. I'm happy to go out getting to do my own thing.

Do you think if you all picked your own songs, it would be a benefit or a disadvantage?
I think it would be a benefit and disadvantage for different artists. I think some people wouldn't know what to choose and other people would sail through that with flying colours.

If you had the choice, who would have you chosen to be your mentor?
I would have picked either Chris or James. But I was really happy with who I got, Chris is just awesome and I only have great things to say about him.

Why did you choose the The X Factor over other singing shows?
I think The X Factor favours the contestants a bit more than The Voice does. I feel like The Voice is more directed at the judges and exposure for the judges, whereas The X Factor puts the contestants first a little bit more.

How well did you get to know the other contestants?
Really well. I really got to know Mahalia, we'd hang out a lot. We would go out and talk rubbish and eat chicken. The relationships are all different though. It was hard with Mahalia, I didn't want to be there in the final two because we're such good friends, but at the same time, I was happy to be able to step down so she could step up.

Who do you think could take the competition out?
I think Louise has a good chance of getting to the top. Louise is a very strong signer and an original competitor. She's probably not going to get all of the teenybopper votes though... There are hordes and hordes of teenyboppers out there who will be voting for the pop star.

What did you mean by your comment about how independent artists should stay true to themselves?
For anyone who goes onto those shows, there's always a little bit of them wanting you to be this or be that, and I just think whoever goes on the show should really stick to their guns. Take everything with a grain of salt - they are experts and they know what they're talking about, but at the same time, you know what you're talking about as well. You are your own person, you've made it this far in life so don't forget who you are through the journey.
