When Erik Thomson signed on to star in Channel Seven’s hit new family drama, 800 Words, the last thing he expected was to find himself caught up in a terrifying, potentially life-threatening incident.

During one routine day of filming, the Scottish-born star was caught totally off-guard when a freak wave struck, leading to a scene of sheer panic.
'I did feel a little bit fearful because I wouldn’t normally be in waves of that size in those conditions - we had jet skis so we could get out to these bigger waves,' he continues.
'But the wave capsized the jet ski, and surfboards went everywhere.'

While the 48-year-old says the emergency subsided in a matter of minutes, he admits things did get 'a little bit hairy for a moment'.
‘Fortunately we’re all strong swimmers and we had really good safety in place,' he said.
