Prince Charles: 'We're hoping for a granddaughter'

The 66-year-old expressed his wish for a female heir at an event held at Windsor Castle as anticipation grows about his son Prince William and wife Kate Middleton's impending new baby.

Charles was joined by Queen Elizabeth II, 89, and Prince Philip, 93, as he presented New Colours to the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards ahead of their centenary year.

Speaking to military veteran Eric Jones on Thursday, he exclaimed: "We're hoping for a granddaughter!"

Lynda Bateman, daughter of Eric, who is the oldest surviving member of the Welsh Guards at 100 years old, spoke to reporters of the encounter between her father and the Prince.

She said: "My father introduced me as his daughter and Prince Charles asked how many daughters he had.

"My father said 'One – and that's enough' and Charles laughed and said 'And we're hoping for a granddaughter!'"

Charles previously admitted he'd like a girl after Prince William and Kate first announced they were expecting their second child.

Kate is now more than a week past her April 23 due date.
