Fighting back tears, Kirstie Fisher fell into her partner Lyle’s arms.
It had been another day of truth-telling and had resulted in another friendship lost.
Kirstie’s big revelation was that she and Lyle, who are first cousins, were in love. After years of secrecy, the world still wasn’t ready to accept it.
"It took me a long time to come to terms with it," 29-year-old Kirstie tells New Idea.
"But Lyle completes me and I couldn’t live without him. I’ve had to learn if people have a problem with it, then that’s their problem."

And people do have a problem with it.
"Friends look at me like I’m a completely different person once I tell them Lyle’s my cousin," Kirstie says.
"The worst comment I’ve had is that our kids will grow two heads and we should move to Tasmania because that’s where we belong."
Lyle, 32, has also lost friends, and the pair haven’t spoken to Kirstie’s dad in seven years after he called them disgusting.
"The fact is we’re not doing anything wrong,’ Kirstie says with frustration. "It’s not illegal to marry your first cousin and we’re not hurting anybody."
