The 5 biggest beauty blunders made by women over 40

Napoleon Perdis, pictured with Miranda Kerr, shares his secrets to mastering make-up over 40.

1. Mask-Like Foundation

Heavy foundation highlights imperfections and fine lines and enhances uneven skin texture. To keep your skin looking fresh past 40, less is more!

Foundation is best applied to the feature focus area, the centre (inverted) triangle of the face containing the eyes, nose and mouth.

Avoid applying excess product on the forehead, outer corner's of the eyes, mouth and jawline.

Try a tinted moisturiser or BB(B) cream for a lighter finish and invest in nourishing skin prep products like cleanser, serum and primer to hydrate the skin and emulate a youthful glow.

2. Concealer that's too light

Avoid using a concealer under the eye that is too lightly coloured; this creates an unwanted 'ashy' tone and emphasises dark circles instead of hiding them.

Counteract dark circles with a warm, peach-based concealer.

Concentrate applying concealer to the inner corner of the eyes and use your fingertips to mould the product into the skin for a real-skin finish.

Avoid applying concealer to the outer corner of the under eye area unless pigmented, as it can accentuate fine lines.

If concealer is needed in these areas, mix your concealer with primer to create a tint so product won't settle into fine lines.

3. Over-powdering the face

A flat, matte finish can accentuate imperfections and fine lines.

Subtle radiance is key; soften fine lines and create a youthful glow by only powdering where needed.

For a radiant look, use a warm-toned cream or liquid luminizer on the high points of the face (tops of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and Cupid's bow) and use the warmth from your fingertips to mould the product into your skin.

Keep powder to a minimum and only use on the hot spots of the face (between the brows, the nose and the chin) to de-shine oil prone areas.

4. Heavy black eyeliner

Don't throw out your black liner! If applied correctly, eye definition can enhance and frame the eyes.

For a softer approach, keep a black liner for the lash lines; smudge a small amount through the upper and lower lash lines using an angled eye shadow brush like Angled Chisel Brush 9a.

Avoid using black pencil in your waterline, instead, open and refresh the eyes by using a white or flesh-toned pencil.

5. A too-powerful pout

As you mature, definition and fullness can be lost from the lips and a very dark, moody lipstick can make lips appear even smaller.

If thinning lips are a concern, opt for a lipstick that adds fullness and hydration to the lips.

A cream lipstick in peach, pink or champagne never fails and a touch of gloss to the centre of the lips will pump-up your pout.

If you can't go without deep berry or burgundy lips, make your pout pop by highlighting the centre of the lips with a champagne-toned lipstick or shadow.
