Aussie actor James Stewart has opened up about his decision to reunite with his estranged father after years of not talking after starring in Gallipoli.

The 39-year-old, who is a dad himself to two-year-old Scout with fiancée Jessica Marais, says playing a Chinese-Australian sniper in the new series made him think about his own father, who fought in Vietnam.

James was raised by his mother who he describes as a 'hippie' however he admits he wants his daughter to know her grandfather.

"Filming the series made me think about tracking down my dad again as I don't want my daughter asking 'Dad why have I got black hair?'," he told the Daily Mail.

"Until the series I never really thought much about the Chinese side of the family, my first names are Jamie Koo, and I realised my dad was called up to go to Vietnam and fight for Australia.

The Packed to the Rafters star has since met up with his father, revealing that the pair marched side-by-side on Anzac day last year.

"It was the first time in I don't know how many years that we saw each other," he said.

Gallipoli is James' first role since the couple welcomed their daughter in 2012, and he took a back seat to let Jess focus on her career.

"I've loved every minute of being home and being a dad to Scout, spending time with my precious family, but now I'm going back to work full-time."
