Beer and egg hair mask

This traditional hair treatment might take a few rinses to wash out (our advice: do it on the weekend when you have nowhere to go), but it’ll nourish your hair and leave it shiny. Just don’t use hot water or you’ll end up with a head full of poached egg.

Cucumber eye cooler

After one too many late nights in the office or a long week running around with the kids, a couple of slices of cucumber placed over your eyes will always help reduce puffiness and leave you feeling pampered.

Honey face mask

Mash up a few odds and ends from your fridge’s salad tray (berries work well) with some oats and honey, and smear across your face. The oats will leave your skin soft, the berries will provide antioxidants and vitamins and the honey will tone the skin.

Salt toothpaste

Add a little unrefined salt to your toothpaste for a great (but not too tasty) way to bring some zing to your gums and help keep them in top condition.

Lemon juice hair lightener

Okay, so it’s not the best idea for dry hair, but a few squeezes of fresh lemon in your beach hair spray will help lighten your hair in the sun. Just go easy on it to help prevent over-drying.

Salt hair spritz

Love that beach-hair look but can’t recreate it when you’re not lazing around on a beach towel? Add a generous amount of unrefined salt and water to a spritzer and give your hair a blast whenever you want a volume boost.

Milk bath

Make like Cleopatra and bathe in milk. While donkey milk might be a bit challenging to lay your hands on, a good glug of cow’s milk will do the trick when it comes to making your skin soft and smooth.

Warm water face steam

Use warm water (not boiling) to recreate a home-spa effect. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oils to a steaming bowl of water and place your face over it to help open pores. Use this opportunity to thoroughly cleanse your skin and gently remove impurities (yes, blackheads, we’re talking about you).

Tea hair shine

Use cooled tea (camomile for blondes, rooibos for red heads and black for brunettes) to rinse over prewashed hair. Not only will you get a hit of antioxidants, but you’ll add shine to your locks too.

Grape and sugar manicure

Cut grapes in half lengthways, then dip in sugar to create a mini natural manicure. The sugar will gently exfoliate assisted by the fruit acids, which will help break down any dead skin cells.
