Meet the Zac Brown Band!

They've won three Grammy's, had their album Ungaged debut at #1 in the USA and have found a fan in music legend Bruce Springsteen!

So it's safe to say that US country and folk band The Zac Brown band have had a successful career! And they are only just getting started.

The band are currently touring Australia and in between performing at sellout shows, they took some time to speak to New Idea magazine...

Who’s in the band and how did you meet?

As well as me there’s bassist John Hopkins, violinist Jimmy De Martini, guitarist/organist Coy Bowles, drummer Chris Fryar and mutli-instrumentalist Clay Cook. We formed eight years ago but it was a 15 year project to bring them all together.

I met them all individually and wanted them to join the band. Mostly, I harassed them to stop playing for the bands they were already in and come and play with me. I can be very persuasive.

It took me three years to get Clay to join the band, but I didn’t give up. It’s been an adventure.

The band has a country/folk type sound. How would you describe it?

We’re a very versatile band and all come from different backgrounds so we can pull off lots of different styles.

We always start with a good song, then arrange around it with some great lyrics. Then comes the harmony.

I’m a big fan of harmonies. My life has been harmonies singing in choruses and bands.

The band has just won it’s third Grammy hasn’t it? How does it feel to win?

We didn’t expect to win so it was wonderful. I was a bit in shock but it’s the most amazing feeling to have that recognition.

We had to reconise the competition we were up against. I'll never forget winning our first in 2010 for the Best Newcomer.

It was one of the best days of my life.

You’re been touring in Australia this month. Have you been before?

It’s my first time coming with the band but I’ve been before on holiday.

I want to get out into the countryside. . It’s the most inspiring. I love how big it is.

It’s been eight years since I have been so I was excited to see how it’s changed.

The things I remember the most are the amazing barbecues with loads of different types of meat and having Vegemite spread on toast.

What’s it like being on tour?

Being on a bus for along time, you start to lose track of what day or week it is. We can do up to three cities in one week.

It’s incredible and confusing all at the same time. It isn't like being on a holiday.
