Body combat: Exercises to combat conditions
We all know exercise is good for us, but how good?
Experts have found that specific types of exercise can combat specific conditions.
Try these to get your health in tip top shape!
1. Glaucoma
EXERCISE: Running
Glaucoma is caused by fluids in the eye not draining properly.
Aerobic exercise such as running can improve circulation in the eye, lowering eye pressure.
2. Gum disease
EXERCISE: Gym classes
A study of 12,000 gym-goers found those who did a range of aerobic classes were 40 per cent less likely to get periodontitis, which leads to gum disease.
3. Osteoporosis
EXERCISE: Resistance training
Weight-bearing exercise causes muscles and ligaments to pull on your bones, encouraging them to strengthen and rebuild.
4. High blood pressure
EXERCISE: Hiking
Walking on uneven surfaces can reduce blood pressure and improve balance, possibly due to stimulating acupressure points in the foot.
5. Asthma
EXERCISE: Yoga
Scientists testing adults with asthma discovered their symptoms almost halved after 10 weeks of regular yoga, thanks to its focus on deep breathing.
