End of summer hair fixes

Drag your ’do back from the dead with specialised advice from Pantene expert hairstylist Barney Martin.

Coloured and dry
‘Always use shampoo and conditioner specifically made for coloured hair,’ Barney says. ‘Follow up with masks and treatments, especially in summer.’ He’s also a big fan of hats because they protect your hair from fading. Taking a dip? ‘Wet hair with fresh water before swimming as your hair is like a sponge and will absorb the salt and chlorine,’ he says. And to keep that after-treatment shine, he advises: ‘Get regular trims as split ends make hair look dull. And visit the salon for a toner in between colouring to brighten your locks.’

Thick and curly
‘Curly hair tends to not retain much moisture, so needs to be bombarded with conditioners and treatments to maintain moisture levels,’ Barney says. ‘This is where heavier products come in – anything to weigh your hair down and give the appearance of having more moisture.’ As for style, cut and colour, Barney warns: ‘Stay away from short layers as they’ll make your hair look wider, and try to avoid highlights as they make hair look thicker. Embrace your curls, enhancing them rather than straightening them out, and encourage the natural drying of your hair, working with its natural movement.’

'Fine and frizzy
‘Hair gets finer as women enter their 30s, especially for women who have had babies,’ Barney explains. As this happens, it’s also prone to the dreaded frizz factor, so Barney recommends anything that puts moisture back into your hair and is lightweight, such as Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light. But he cautions: ‘Less is more with styling products.’ Always select products specific to fine hair, and anything with a smoothing element. ‘When blow-drying, invest in a quality brush and blow-dry down to smooth the cuticles, reduce frizz and increase shine.’ Volume is vital,
so Barney recommends colouring, which works to swell and lifts your locks.

How to: put your hair in a chic bun

Barney talks us through this quick, easy but oh-so chic style...

To keep your bun classic like Kate Beckinsale, Barney recommends to go low into the nape of the neck and to ‘push it to the side’ for extra glam. Or try the good ol’ instant facelift: just pull it up high and tight.

  • Brush hair back in a ponytail and tie with an elastic.

  • Lightly backcomb the stray strands to make sure it holds texture.

  • Twist hair around the elastic and pin into place.
