Netflix Reveals Plan to 100% Phase Out Cheapest Ad-Free Tier
Netflix’s cheapest ad-free option is soon going extinct.
As the streamer continues to grow alongside recent password-sharing crackdowns and ad-based tiers, Netflix is planning to phase out its $11.99 ad-free option, the company revealed Tuesday via shareholder letter.

The Basic plan had been previously made unavailable to new and returning users last summer, but is currently still available to those already subscribed to the tier. The plan will begin to disappear slowly by territory, with the U.K. and Canada being the first to drop it starting this spring. It’s unclear how current subscribers will be affected once the option is pulled from them.
Ad-free options will then be streamlined into two tiers. Standard will cost $15.49 per month and will include full HD streaming, two supported devices at a time and up to one extra member. Premium will jump up to $22.99 per month, with features like Ultra HD support, the option to stream from six devices at one time and up to two extra members.
Its ads plan, however, currently accounts for 40% of all new sign-ups, according to the streamer, and is said to have increased 70% quarter over quarter. These plans (which currently hover at $6.99 per month) received an update in November, including a feature that gives users one episode ad-free if they binge three in a row.
Are you still using the Basic ad-free plan? What will you do once that option disappears? Let us know in the comments.
