Mum's unsettling discovery about son's babysitter sparks debate

A mum has revealed she made an unsettling discovery about her son's babysitter while she was out for a date night with her husband.

Danielle Mitchell posted a video on TikTok asking her followers if her concerns were an overreaction before explaining what happened while the babysitter was watching her 10-month-old.

"We don't leave to go on date nights until [our son] is fully asleep but I tried to put him down and my husband tried to put him down and he just really wanted to be held," she explained in her video.

"So [the babysitter] just rocked him for like 15 minutes and we went ahead and left.

"She told me he was really easy ... and then he was asleep for the rest of the night."

The mum said she and her husband were only gone for three hours, but during their date at 9pm decided to check the cameras around their house.

To the mum's horror, she noticed the babysitter had appeared to have fallen asleep on the couch.

"She told me she was going to listen to a book so I was like, "OK, maybe she's just laying on the couch or listening to her book," the mum explained.

"Our dog was outside and it was 9pm. And so I texted her and I was like, "Hey, do you mind bringing the dog inside because it's dark'.

"We watch the camera to see if she would move or anything and she didn't ... she was asleep.

"Then like internally I'm kind of starting to like freak out, like she's watching our son, and she's asleep – but he's also asleep. But he's only 10 months."

The mum was worried the babysitter would not hear her baby if he woke up crying so she and her husband left their date to go home.

She added it took her babysitter a moment to wake up after they walked through the door, with the mum then noticing the sound monitor was turned off.

"So now I don't know what to think," Danielle said in her video.

"Is it normal for your babysitter to fall asleep when they're watching your kids if you're back by 9.30pm? It wasn't like we were back at 2am."

The video has racked up more than 180,000 views and more than 13,000 comments from people debating the situation.

Some questioned whether the mum had informed the babysitter there were cameras in the house, while others said the situation should not have caused the mum concern.

"If the kid(s) are asleep, it is normal for the babysitter to fall asleep. However, the monitor should have been on and turned all the way up," one commented.

"Definitely a first-time parent overreaction and that's OK. He was asleep and safe. We all take a bit to wake up when asleep, even as parents," another said.

"If you didn't go over expectations before leaving then it is not her fault. Especially young babysitters would not know unless told," a third added.

"Just talk and set expectations so she knows. I would give her another try because she did get the baby asleep which takes talent."

Others however said the mum had a right to be alarmed by the situation.

"I would not use her again, I used to babysit and did not ever sleep while doing my job. If you did that on a job outside you would be fired," one said.

"She was only hired for THREE hours. Why would she fall asleep?? This is not OK in my opinion," another claimed.

"I'd be so embarrassed if I fell asleep. I'd be apologising. You're not overreacting," a third added.
