Choosing a baby name is fraught with danger. Play it too safe and you might struggle to pick your child out from a horde of similarly named kids. Go too hard and have some wondering if you’ve pushed the creative name boundary a little far.
Proving just how hard it is to get the balance right, one Mumsnet user has taken to the online forum to ask people to reveal some of the worst names they’ve heard – and the responses are eye-opening to say the least.
“In the supermarket today and heard a mum shout "Beige" to her daughter... no joke! At first I thought I had misheard Paige... but no, definitely Beige,” wrote the user. “Got me thinking… what are the worst names you have come across?"
The question triggered hundreds of responses.
“A friend of a friend [on Facebook] named her daughter Hernia,” wrote one commenter. “Now I'm not sure if it's a nickname or not as I couldn't see the persons whole fb profile (she commented on friend’s post) but c'mon Hernia?!”
“A mum in my baby yoga group called her son Beowulf,” added another.
“Oceania,” revealed another person posting on the forum. “I heard it in the local radio… I had to do a double take as Oceania was a downmarket early 90's nightclub in town.”
“There is also a mum on the school run who has a toddler called Bubbles, I asked if it was a nickname, it's not,” added another.
“I also genuinely burst out laughing when someone shouted 'Princess' in soft play,” revealed one Mumsnet user. “Thank god the woman who shouted it laughed and said she's a childminder and gets embarrassed shouting it herself.”
However some have hit out at the discussion, saying people are entitled to name their children whatever they want.
“It's not very kind to laugh at the names people have chosen with love for their child,” said one. “You may not like the (boring, mainstream) names I have chosen for my children but… who are you to judge me and my choices when you don't even know me.”
