Mum's extreme mess solution slammed: 'So unbelievably upset'

A mum has gone viral on TikTok after turning her daughter's bedroom into a "mini jail" when the eight-year-old refused to clean her room for a week.

User @hi_imholly started the video by saying, "On another episode of mean mum TikTok - today we are turning my child's room into a little mini jail.

"I know this will probably piss a couple of Gen Z's off, but this is how we're going to do it in my house. We have given my daughter a week's notice to clean her room, she's a pre-teen, she knows how to clean. We've trained her to clean."

The mum and her husband began cleaning their daughter's very messy room, clearing it of anything that could be classified as 'fun' other than books.

She continued, saying she's cleaned her daughter's room for her multiple times and they had given her a deadline of midday that day to clean it, but she'd instead chosen to go outside and play.

"So, we're taking away all of her clothes, all of her toys, all of her makeup, all of the fun stuff. All she has left are books and then her shoes, I'm going to be picking out one outfit a day for her to wear and she has to wear it and that's about it.

"She'll get her stuff back in increments and I'm going to go through most of her toys and get rid of a lot of them, but until then, this is how it's going to be, because I'm tired of speaking over and over again about cleaning and she just doesn't."

Commenters weren't exactly impressed with the video, which has been viewed over four million times.

"How is that helpful in any way shape or form?" one user commented. "Just say if she wants a clean room she has to do it herself. Also you TEACH/GUIDE a child, you TRAIN a dog."

"So you are taking away all her belongings because she didn't behave like the way you wanted her to? Don't be surprised when she doesn't talk to you growing up," another said.

"Trained??? Girl what is she, your pet?" someone else added.

"My mum did stuff like this to me as a pre-teen and now I'm in therapy because of it," one said.

"This made me so unbelievably upset," another wrote.

Others thought it was a great idea with one user writing, "I just showed this to my eight-year-old. She's cleaning her room right now. Thank you!"

"I love this. I'm so implementing it with my son," another wrote.

"Parenting done right!" someone else said.

The TikToker added in the comments, "We are not going to be posting her reaction, she cried a lot and I don't want to embarrass her. I still love her and her feelings are valid in this."

In another video, her daughter tells viewers she was "surprised" by the change to her room when she first saw it, but was glad she still had her phone and her books.

"Now I learned to keep my room clean," she said.
