How much Australian couples really spend on their wedding day


It’s one of the biggest days of any loved-up couples’ lives; getting hitched and celebrating with family and friends.

And it seems the amount of money people are spending on their wedding day is just growing, according to a new survey from Easy Weddings.

They surveyed 4,100 couples between September and October last year, who shared pretty much everything about their big day, from their whole budget to their honeymoon destination.

The 2019 Annual Australian Wedding Industry Report reveals that the median amount Aussie couples are spending on their wedding is $27,000.

Interestingly, the average amount people are coughing up to say ‘I do’ in style is $32,333 – $10,000 more than couples had originally planned on spending.

The report found that on average, nine percent of couples will spend more than $60,000 on their wedding day and 59 percent will get financial aid from their parents.

On average, couples will spend $157 per head for a wedding venue, with an average of 97 guests at the wedding.

Brides and grooms spent on average $15,264 on a wedding venue, $2,649 on a dress, $9,666 on catering, $2,702 on videography, $721 on a celebrant and $2,963 on photography.

The all-important wedding music came in on average at $1,651, bridesmaids’ dresses at $814 and decorations at $1,529.

Couples spent on average $772 on invitations, $1,618 on wedding flowers. $537 on a cake and $740 on hair and makeup.

The top honeymoon destinations were Queensland at number one, Europe at number two and Fiji came in third.

USA, Maldives, Bali, Hawaii, New Zealand, Thailand and Japan rounded up the top 10.

And guests weren’t exempt from the survey, with the study finding that wedding guests say an average of $120 per couple is considered an appropriate amount to spend on a wedding gift. This increases to $220 per couple for close family or friends.
