Moschino designer Jeremy Scott debuts 2021 collection with marionettes

Designer Jeremy Scott has always been known for his kitschy, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic. This fashion season was no different.

The Moschino designer debuted the line’s spring and summer 2021 collection using marionettes instead of models. Scott collaborated with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop for a short movie with 40 new looks worn by 30-inch puppets.

The fashion show, entitled “No Strings Attached,” even features famous guests in the front row. Anna Wintour, Nina Garcia, Vanessa Friedman, Angelica Cheung and Edward Enninful were a few of the elite journalists depicted as puppets.

Scott came up with the idea in the wake of the pandemic. He needed a way of showcasing Moschino’s latest selections.

“I tried to look at all of this as opportunities, not obstacles,” Scott told Variety. “My mantra has been from the very beginning, ‘My body may be in quarantine, but my mind isn’t.’ I’m a creative person who is extremely used to lots of people, travel, all these different things going on and to have everything just stop, I had to think about how to create and deliver the emotion of my work.”

The looks reference the airy and decadent trims, ruffles, corsets and panniers of the 17th and 18th century with a modern twist like zippers and moto jackets.

“Fundamentally I think about creativity like water,” Scott told Variety. “I can pour it in a glass, in a vase. I could pour it in my pool, I could pour it in the cracks of the sidewalk. It will still be water. It will still be creativity. It will just take different forms.”
