Mark Duplass's marriage rules with his wife, Katie Aselton, are very relatable.

The Morning Show actor told PEOPLE exclusively during the 76th Annual Performer Nominee Celebration at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Sept. 13 how he and Aselton, 45, make their marriage work amid busy schedules.

When asked whether Duplass, 47, has any rules for his marriage, he says that although they don't have "hard and fast rules," they "do try to get away just the two of us every three months or so."

"I think getting two or three days together is very helpful and we've kind of done that pretty consistently since we had kids," he explains.

Duplass also explains that when he and Aselton speak to one another, they avoid exaggerated language. "And then I think that we try to stay away from big hyperbole. That can put a lot of pressure on things. I love you so much. You're the most amazing person in the world most of the time."

"So most of the time it's a big thing for us," he concludes.

According to Asleton, she and Duplass met in 2001 at a New Year's Eve party when she was 23 years old. The two have been together since, getting married in August 2006. They also have two daughters, Molly and Ora.

The couple celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary in August. In honor of the occasion, the Togetherness star dedicated a sweet Instagram post to his wife. "This is my best friend Katie," he captioned a photo of them standing on rocks by the water. "We did a bunch of small, silly things together yesterday and I genuinely had one of the best days of my life."
