‘Moana 2’ Riding High With $717M Global, ‘Wicked’ Whizzes To $525M, ‘Pushpa 2’ Record-Breaking Run Continues; Little Appetite For ‘Kraven’ – International Box Office

UPDATED: Here we are in the pre-holiday period with strong returns from the top two studio titles already in the marketplace, and a not unexpected uninspiring start from a movie that has jumped around the calendar.

Taking the latter first, much as it has Stateside, Sony’s Kraven the Hunter failed to whip up much appetite from overseas audiences. The international debut in 60 markets was $15M, for a global start of $26M. There are still some markets to release, and we’ll see where this goes.

Importantly, we are seeing strong continued play from Moana 2 and Wicked; both films wisely took advantage of a pre-holiday corridor.

Disney’s surfer girl sequel continues to charm with a current international weekend of $57.2M from 52 offshore markets (-44%). The total split is now $337.5M domestic and $379.5M from all offshore markets for $717M worldwide.

Highlights with these results: Dis has $2.4B in animated box office this year, Moana 2 has surpassed Dune: Part Two to become the No. 4 studio movie worldwide in 2024, and, it’s the No. 4 Walt Disney Animation Studios release ever globally. The Imax total is $15M worldwide.

Internationally, it’s the No. 5 Hollywood movie of the year. The Top 5 markets are France ($40.5M), UK ($33.5M), Germany ($24.8M), Mexico ($23.5M) and Brazil ($21.1M).

Moana 2 is likely on its way to a $1B worldwide gross — not a slam dunk, but given the movie opened overseas without holidays, the play-through could help it get there.

Meanwhile, Universal’s Wicked licked the $500M global milestone this session, adding $21.5M from 81 offshore markets (-39%) to lift the international cume to $166M. With $525M global, the movie is playing more to domestic, as expected, but continues to make its mark overseas. In Germany, it scored the biggest stage-musical adaptation opening ever this weekend; and it crossed $50M in the UK where it has surpassed the lifetimes of Les Misérables and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, moving into Universal’s Top 15 titles of all time in the market.. Globally, it is the biggest non-sequel of the year and the No. 2 stage adaptation ever (behind only Mamma Mia! and beating Les Misérables). Imax is at $19.4M.

Here are the Top 5 markets: UK ($55.2M), Australia ($20.1M), Korea ($12M), Mexico ($9M) and Philippines ($5M).

Pan-Indian box office juggernaut Pushpa 2: The Rule continues to break records at home and globally. The gross in the home market is an estimated $120M. ComScore is calling worldwide at $167M, though we have heard a lower figure and will update accordingly.

We understand the second weekend in India set a new record with approximately $24M, while Pushpa 2 became only the second Indian movie to ever cross 1000 crore ($118M) in the market.

Worldwide, the Allu Arjun-starrer topped the 1000 crore milestone on Thursday, making it only the 7th Indian movie to the mark (8th including 3D charges, per Pink Villa). Either way, it is the fastest title to get there, doing so in eight days which outpaces Baahubali 2 (nine days).

The film’s success comes in the wake of a tragic incident at a cinema in Hyderabad on December 4 which saw fans stampede the theater, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old woman and injuries to her young son. Arjun was arrested late last week in connection with the incident, then granted interim bail.
