Yahoo Lifestyle MLB players union issues blistering statement about delayed Mookie Betts trade
While baseball fans wonder when the reported trade that would send Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers will be made official, the Major League Baseball Players Association is now taking aim at the parties involved with a blistering message: Get it done.
Tony Clark, head of the players union, issued a statement Friday afternoon that made it clear where he union stands on this. He talks about the “unethical leaking of medical information” and the “perversion of salary arbitration.”
This, of course, is bigger than just Mookie Betts putting on Dodger blue. Four different teams have a stake in the trade, from the Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins, who are involved in the Betts deal, to the Los Angeles Angels, who have a second deal with the Dodgers that hinges on the Betts trade.
The holdup is that the Red Sox weren’t happy with what they saw in the medical report of pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol, who is supposed to come over from the Twins. The snag in medicals has hung up the trade for three days now.
To which, Clark said: Enough. Here’s his statement in full:
“The proposed trades between the Dodgers, Red Sox, Twins, and Angels need to be resolved without further delay. The events of this last week have unfairly put several Players’ lives in a state of limbo. The unethical leaking of medical information as well as the perversion of the salary arbitration process serve as continued reminders that too often Players are treated as commodities by those running the game.”
There’s still belief around the game that the trade will get done. Recent reports have it being “reconfigured” to the liking of the Red Sox. But Clark isn’t the only one upset. Angels owner Arte Moreno is also reportedly angry that the Angels’ deal with the Dodgers hasn’t been finalized yet.
