Milhouse's original voice actor leaving “The Simpsons” after 35 years

Pamela Hayden also voiced Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, and numerous other characters on the show.

Everything is no longer coming up Milhouse.

Pamela Hayden, who provided the voice of Bart Simpson's dorky buddy on all 35 seasons of The Simpsons, is retiring from the animated comedy after almost 700 episodes. “The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons?......not easily," Hayden said in a statement. "It's been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show, and to give voice to Milhouse (and Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Janey, Malibu Stacy, and many others)."

Simpsons creator Matt Groening explained Milhouse's origins in a press release. "Bart needed someone to talk to in the school cafeteria. We named him Milhouse because that was the most unfortunate name a kid could have," he said. "Pamela gave us tons of laughs with Milhouse, the hapless kid with the biggest nose in Springfield.  She made Milhouse hilarious and real, and we will miss her."

Fox said that recasting Milhouse and Hayden's other characters will start in the near future. Hayden also voiced the bully Jimbo Jones, Ned Flanders' eldest son Rod, Chief Wiggum's wife Stacy, and at least ten other minor characters.

"Here's to everyone who made this terrific ride I've been on possible. Thanks for 35 years!!  Be well and happy. My best to you all," Hayden concluded. "P.S. I'll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with glasses."

In a tribute video commemorating her 35 years on the show (see above), Hayden reflected, "One thing that I love about Milhouse is, he's always getting knocked down, but he keeps getting up. I love the little guy. It's this wonderful analogy for life. You put your glasses back on, and you go on."

Milhouse first appeared in a Butterfinger commercial alongside Bart in 1988, and later appeared in the first-ever full length episode of The Simpsons, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," in 1989.

The Simpsons' core cast remains almost completely intact after 35 seasons, as key actors like Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, and Harry Shearer have all remained on the show since its debut in 1989. However, supporting actors like Doris Grau (Lunchlady Doris) and Russi Taylor (Martin, Sherri, and Terri) have had their roles recast following their real-life deaths.
