Mike Perry apologizes to sponsors, UFC after restaurant incident: 'I will be better all around'

UFC fighter Mike Perry apologized for his actions at a Texas bar more than three weeks ago, saying he wants “to be a better role model for my family.”

Perry was involved in an incident on July 8 that was caught on video. UFC condemned the actions and said he would not be offered a bout anytime soon.

Perry wrote on Twitter:

“I want to be a better role model for my family. For my unborn son. My Queen [girlfriend Latory Gonzalez] and for myself so I can earn the respect I deserve. To my sponsors and my bosses at UFC I want to apologize for how my actions have impacted our relationships. I will be better all around.”

In a video posted early in July, Perry can be seen exiting a restaurant and asking if the police were called on him. He gets more heated as the video goes on and punches a man, who then falls to the ground. More people come to watch the situation and Perry begins using racial slurs multiple times.

Perry was not arrested or charged for the incident, though a police report was filed. UFC condemned the actions and said in a statement it was “not reflective of ... our organization.”

The statement continued, in part:

“He further acknowledged that he believes he has some issues related to alcohol abuse and has informed UFC that he has committed to immediately seek professional treatment, including substance and behavioral counseling.”

After the incident at the restaurant, MMA Junkie reported that Perry’s ex-wife, Danielle Nickerson, filed a restraining order against him in March. She alleged Perry threatened physical harm against her. The judge ruled against her order.

Perry has been seen using racial slurs several times in the past and defended it by saying his DNA test showed he is 2 percent black. The defense has not sat well with the Black community and UFC has never handed down any discipline.
