Mike Flanagan is making a Clayface movie for DC with “The Batman” director — and it's coming in 2026
Flanagan is writing the movie, based on the notable Dark Knight villain, while Matt Reeves produces.
Mike Flanagan's Clayface movie is officially taking shape.
The horror maestro behind Netflix hits like The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, as well as the upcoming Exorcist movie, is writing a film based on the classic Batman villain Clayface. The Batman director Matt Reeves is also involved as a producer with his production company business partner Lynn Harris.
A director and lead actor have yet to be confirmed, but it's all coming together faster than we think. Warner Bros. formally slated the movie for release on Sept. 11, 2026.

Flanagan mentioned his desire to do a Clayface story back in 2021. In a since-deleted tweet, he wrote at the time that he would approach such a movie as a "horror/thriller/tragedy." While appearing far more recently on the Script Apart podcast, the filmmaker mentioned that he met with producer Jon Berg for a general meeting at DC Studios and expressed his interest in a "horror-leaning" take on the character.
Multiple different characters claimed the name Clayface throughout the history of DC Comics. The first to do so was Basil Karlo, a B-list actor who goes insane after he learns that a remake of a horror movie he once starred in is moving forward without him. These days, when most people think of Clayface, they think of the sometimes Batman adversary, sometimes Batman ally made entirely out of oozing mud that allows him to shapeshift into different forms at will.
Alan Tudyk currently voices the character in a more comedic capacity for the animated Harley Quinn series. Reeves also utilized a character with a familiar-sounding name, Eve Karlo, played by Carmen Ejogo, in his HBO series The Penguin.
James Gunn, who heads DC Studios with Peter Safran, marked Friday's announcement on Threads. He confirmed Clayface will be "a DCU story," meaning the characters will exist in the same universe as this year's Creature Commandos, next year's Superman and Peacemaker season 2, and the like.

Warner Bros. also slated its animated Dynamic Duo movie, about two different Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, for release on June 30, 2028, in IMAX.
Flanagan, meanwhile, is also working on an Amazon series based on Stephen King's Carrie.
