What’s the ‘It might sound crazy what I’m ’bout to say’ TikTok trend?
A slowed-down version of Pharrell Williams’ 2013 song “Happy” has inspired a TikTok trend that references shocking and iconic pop culture moments. The one lyric used particularly in the new trend is: “It might seem crazy what I’m ’bout to say.” A lot of the examples of the trend are slideshow TikToks, which seems to be a favored way of expression for Gen Z users.
In one viral slideshow, a creator took the pivotal scene between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. After Skywalker accuses Darth Vader of killing his father, the next slide shows Darth Vader, with the lyric caption, “It might seem crazy what I’m ’bout to say” — referring to the moment Darth Vader was revealed as (spoiler alert) Skywalker’s father.
How did the ‘It might sound crazy what I’m ’bout to say’ trend start?
The trend of using the slowed-down audio of the song began with TikTok user @dduck_.gach40ffica1 in early November. The original TikTok with the audio, featuring the creator’s animation of a humanized Donald Duck character, now has 987,000 views.
Since then, the lyric has appeared in more mainstream cultural references — usually when there’s a big twist coming up.
‘It might sound crazy what I’m ’bout to say’ meme examples
Another popular example is when the character Ross from Friends is at the altar with his bride-to-be. He infamously accidentally says his ex-girlfriend Rachel’s name instead of the bride’s.
From there, other TikTok users have taken the audio and set it to a wide variety of circumstances, such as plot twists in classic literature. In this case, it’s the character of Gregor Samsa waking up to discover he’s a cockroach in Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis.
Another TikToker set the audio to scenes from the horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s, where Josh Hutcherson’s character asks where his little sister’s babysitter, Max, is. Spoiler alert: Max gets “eaten” by the animatronic Freddy Fazbear figure. The movie, based on the popular video game of the same name, also became a viral meme on TikTok after it was released in October.
Or viral real-life events, like when actress Dakota Johnson confronted Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2019. Johnson’s reaction to DeGeneres claiming she wasn’t invited to Johnson’s birthday party became a meme immediately after the episode aired.
Beyond cultural events, the trend has also been applied to personal, universal experiences — like wondering where all your money goes.
