This sex scene is shocking cinema-goers around the world.

The lengthy sequence sees Christian, the male lead - played by Irish actor Jack Reynor - and a female character copulating as a dozen fully nude women surround them, rooting them on in deranged fashion.

It takes place in Midsommar, the new Ari Aster-directed horror/thriller about a group of US students who head to the Swedish countryside to join one of their classmates for his extended family's “traditional” festivities, celebrating the summer solstice.

Before they know it, the young friends’ fun Eurotrip turns into the stuff of twisted, sordid nightmares as their cultish hosts launch into increasingly violent rituals.

The film has yet to be classified in Australia but has been slapped with an 18+ rating for “strong gory images” by the British Board of Film Classification.

In the US it’s rated R for “disturbing ritualistic violence and grisly images, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and language.”

Even Jack, 27, admits that the graphic sex scene - which required him to do full-frontal nudity - was confronting.

"It's f***ed up, right?" he told Kevin Polowy of Yahoo Movies.

"I found the sex scene very difficult," the Transformers: Age of Extinction star admitted, calling it "humiliating" and "exposing."

“It was really intense, and it was part of the reason why I wanted to do the film, because I wanted to experience that,” he added.

The scene was so disturbing that viewers took to social media to share their thoughts.

One recalled how they were “simultaneously laughing and scared out of their mind,” while another called it “the most bizarre sex scene you’ll ever sit through.”

Midsommar director Ari’s debut feature film was last year's similarly unnerving arthouse horror hit Hereditary, which starred Aussie actor Toni Collette.

Midsommar also stars Florence Pugh and Will Poulter and is currently showing in selected theatres with a wider release expected.
