Michelle Obama admits she and Barack had marriage counselling

Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the USA, has gotten real about marriage counselling in a candid interview.

The 54-year-old and he husband Barack Obama, former US President, are known for having a solid, exemplary marriage.

Yet, as she revealed in an interview with Good Morning America, the Obamas, like many other couples, went through counselling at one point during their marriage.

I know too many young couples who struggle and think there’s something wrong with them and I want them to know that Michelle and Barack Obama, who have a phenomenal marriage and love each other, we work on our marriage,” she told interviewer Robin Roberts.

Michelle, who first met Barack when she mentored him at a law practice they were both working at, also shared what she had gained through the counselling process.

“Marriage counselling for us was one of those ways where we learned how to talk out our differences. What I learnt about myself was my happiness was up to me,” she told Roberts.

The full, live interview with Michelle will air on Tuesday 13 November on Good Morning America, the same day Michelle’s memoir, ‘Becoming’, will be released.

In her memoir ‘Becoming’, Michelle also opens up about her struggles with fertility before conceiving her two daughters, Malia and Sasha.

“We were trying to get pregnant and it wasn’t going well,” Obama writes in the book, according to The Associated Press.

“We had one pregnancy test come back positive, which caused us both to forget every worry and swoon with joy, but a couple of weeks later I had a miscarriage, which left me physically uncomfortable and cratered any optimism we felt.”

Michelle and Barack eventually went on to welcome daughters Malia and Sasha into the world by IVF.
