Michael Keaton Jokes His Grandkids Weren't Quite Sure If He Had Hair or Not: 'I'm Right Here'

The 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' star is granddad to his son Sean's kids River and Maggie

Michael Keaton has played many roles, but one of his favorite of all is being a granddad.

The Beetlejuice actor, 72, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, Aug. 19, and spoke with host Jimmy Fallon about how his son Sean had helped the host with his recent song "Wrap Me Up." Fallon then asked Keaton about his two grandkids, Sean's kids River, 7, and Maggie, 5.

"Sean's got a couple of children. My grandchildren. I'm not really that crazy about 'em," Keaton joked on the show.

"No, yeah. It's great. I love it. It's fantastic. It's so good, I don't even know where to start. People get tired of hearing from me," he continued before launching into his story. "I'm in the car and I'm driving, you know, with the two of them in the back. We're going somewhere ... I take them everywhere."

"And I hear them talking. I hear them talking in the back. And it's something like, 'No he doesn't.' I'm not paying any attention. I'm driving," the Batman actor said. "They go, 'Yeah. Look. You see?' And then I hear them saying things like, 'No, no, no he has some hair in the back. See?' "

"I swear to God," Keaton added. "And then he goes ... I think first it was like, 'No, it's not. It's white. It's not hair.' They're breaking it down," he laughed. "'Dude, I'm right here. I'm right in the front!' "

In April 2023 at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas, director Andy Muschietti told IGN that Keaton was overcome with emotion as he stepped into the Batcave on the set of The Flashreprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman for the first time since 1992's Batman Returns.

"When [Keaton] arrived to the set, the Batcave was already finished and it was lit and everything. He stayed like this [eyes wide] for a while. I didn't want to interrupt him," the director told the outlet. "I just wanted for him to take it in. Who knows what was going on there? But something was going on there."

Muschietti continued, "It was funny because at one point during the scene where we shot him in the full suit, he was like, 'Can you take a picture? It's for my grandson.' It was one of those moments where he really showed something was inside that was very emotional."

Keaton also played Batman in Batgirl, which was canceled in 2022, despite being nearly finished.

Keaton's next film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, opens in theaters on Sept. 6. He also stars in Goodrich, which is scheduled for release on Oct. 18 and costars Mila Kunis.
