Miami postpones football workouts, reportedly after multiple positive COVID-19 tests among players

The University of Miami has postponed its football workouts after multiple players reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

The Miami Herald reported Thursday that “at least three” football players tested positive, causing the school to cancel Thursday’s workouts. Miami confirmed that Thursday’s workouts were called off, but did not confirm if any of its players tested positive, citing university policy.

“Out of an abundance of caution and in coordination with our return-to-campus policy, we elected to postpone today’s workout,” a university spokesman told multiple outlets.

The Hurricanes began mandatory football workouts on Monday after initially bringing players back to campus for voluntary workouts in mid-June. The players have been working out in small groups. It is unclear when Miami’s workouts will resume.

Miami became the 11th FBS program to pause workouts due to positive coronavirus tests among its players. It is the second to do so since the beginning of mandatory workouts. East Carolina announced Wednesday that it had paused athletic activities in all sports after 27 confirmed cases out of the 452 tests it had issued. Of the 27 positives, five have fully recovered. The tests covered athletes, coaches and staff.

East Carolina, which has a game against Marshall scheduled for Aug. 29 during “Week 0,” began its mandatory workouts last week, on July 6. The Pirates were scheduled to officially begin preseason camp on July 31.

Other schools to pause workouts over the course of the summer include Ohio State, North Carolina, Texas and Clemson.

Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel reported Wednesday night that the NCAA and Power Five conference commissioners are expected to release a report detailing medical recommendations for COVID-19 testing for the 2020 season.
