Mets announce no other players have tested positive for coronavirus since Thursday's positive tests

The New York Mets might resume playing sooner than expected. The team announced Saturday that no other member of the organization has tested positive for the coronavirus since the team’s two positive tests Thursday.

That sample includes tests taken Thursday night and Friday. It also includes players who came into contact with those who produced positive tests.

The team is still waiting to hear from MLB on when it can resume play. Until then, the team’s traveling party will remain in self-isolation.

When will the Mets resume playing?

MLB has varied in how it has handled teams dealing with positive coronavirus tests. Both the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals missed more than a week’s worth of games while waiting for players to test negative. The Cincinnati Reds, however, missed just three games after a player tested positive for the coronavirus on Aug. 15.

The Mets could follow the Reds’ timeline as long as players continue to test negative for the coronavirus. The Mets have already missed four games due to the coronavirus. The team is off Monday, but is scheduled to begin a series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. It’s unclear whether the Mets will be allowed to play that series.

MLB has dealt with numerous coronavirus postponements

When the Mets return, MLB will need to adjust the team’s schedule so it can get in 60 games. MLB has had to adjust a number of schedules this season to make up for coronavirus postponements. The league has mostly accomplished that by adding doubleheaders to the schedule.

After missing time earlier in the season, the Cardinals will play 32 games in September, including seven doubleheaders. As of right now, the team is only scheduled for 58 games this season, as MLB has yet to reschedule the Cardinals’ series against the Detroit Tigers.

While the Mets haven’t missed enough games to make rescheduling an issue, the team should prepare to play a few extra doubleheaders to finish out the season.
