Have (Swedish) Passport, Will Travel

Bitten by the travel bug but put off by the hassle – and cost – of obtaining multiple visas?

It might pay to find out if you have Swedish ancestry.

According to a passport analysis by booking website GoEuro, citizens of Sweden possess the world's most powerful documents, with the bearers entitled visa-free entry to 174 countries.

Finnish, German, UK and US passport holders can also enter the same number of countries visa free, but Swedes win out when price is factored into the equation: a Swedish passport costs the equivalent of $52, just one hour's wages at the minimum wage.

Australia finished in 22nd spot. Aussie passports allow entry to 168 countries without a visa and cost $250, the equivalent of 14 hours at the minimum wage

Coming in last on the list of 51 passports were those from Afghanistan, which allow visa-free entry to only 28 countries, cost the equivalent of $111 and take 183 hour's work to buy.

Swedish passports also have a more unenviable status: in 2013 they were reported to be one of the most frequently sold on the black market, the reason being there's no limit on the number of replacements the rightful holder can claim.
