Its other heavy hitter is silica, an essential component of healthy connective tissue, which includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone.

Composed of over 90 per cent water, cucumber is useful for keeping hydrated during the summer months and absolutely vital in maintaining a pretty boy's glowing skin. Use them in salads, sandwiches, dips and soups.

Tasty Tzatziki

  • 1 Lebanese cucumber
  • 200g low-fat natural yoghurt
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 tbsp finely-chopped mint
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt and black pepper
Cut cucumber in half and scoop out the seeds. Grate remainder of the flesh into a bowl and sprinkle with salt. Place in a strainer for 10 minutes and drain off excess liquids. Add the yoghurt, garlic, mint and lemon juice and mix well. Season and refrigerate.
