CAR REVIEW: Volkswagen Scirocco R

THE SOLUTION: Volkswagen Scirocco R

How’s it different to VW’s other hot hatches?
Well, it looks hot, whereas the GTI and R models look like normal, white bread Golfs, save for subtle badging and a funky exhaust. It’s lower and lighter than its R cousin and shares its powerful four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Like the GTI and unlike the all-wheel drive R, it’s front-drive only. Price-wise, it sits between the two.

Do the front wheels struggle with all that power?
No, everything’s kept in check by a clever electronic diff lock, which maximises individual wheel traction at all times. The national press launch was held in torrential rain in the Victorian high country, the Scirocco’s razor sharp handling taking the appalling conditions in its stride. Makes you seriously consider whether AWD is worth the added expense.

Looks pretty low. Any coupe compromises?
Of course. It’s strictly a four-seater and those swoopy A pillars either side of the windscreen restrict vision around sharper corners. Access to the back is okay though and once there, it’s reasonably spacious for medium-length trips. Rear vision is restricted and VW should consider a reversing camera option. But it looks sensational and is sure to draw envious glances from the (many, many) GTI drivers out there.

Speaking of options, is there a long list?
Happily, no. Just three boxes to tick: sat nav, premium audio and panoramic glass roof. VW have opted to offer just the top spec in Australia, at a pretty tasty price.

What’s it like to drive?
Terrific. The adaptive suspension system tightens things up nicely in sport mode, though the comfort setting’s best for around town on the standard 19” rims. VW’s rorty, snarling 2.0L engine provides the perfect accompanying soundtrack.

Who are its rivals?
Aside from its taller stablemates, the Mini and the Renault Megane Sport 250 Cup are a bit cheaper, the Audi TT’s a bit more.
