MasterChef's Melissa Leong's nod to US election in sweet post

Melissa Leong has given a nod to the recent US election in a sweet message congratulating 2020 Junior MasterChef winner, Georgia.

The famous foodie took to Instagram after Monday night’s season finale to share a brilliant photo of 11-year-old Georgia proudly raising the silver trophy over her head.

In the touching caption, Melissa drew parallels between Georgia’s amazing achievement with that of another famous woman on the other side of the globe: newly-elected Vice President Kamala Harris.

“In the same week that the incredible @kamalaharris said of her rise to VP elect ‘Every little girl that’s watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities,’ ...over here in this corner of the world, our very own little girl showed us all what’s possible,” the 38-year-old wrote.

“Georgia. At 11, you are already out-classing kids twice your age in wisdom, self possession and grace (and obviously culinary talent).

It’s not the first time Melissa has referenced VP Harris on Instagram. On Sunday, she congratulated Harris, the first female, mixed-race, US vice president on her victory.

“Anytime a woman rises to the top, we are all better for it,” she wrote.

Melissa has long been an advocate for more diverse representation in media and has opened up about the unacceptable racism she’s faced since childhood.

During an interview on The Project in October, Melissa fought back tears as she discussed how fellow MasterChef judge Jock Zonfrillo stands up to bullies online for her, and her early memories of hearing the same insults as a young girl.
