Melissa Barrera says substantial job offers went 'quiet for like 10 months' after “Scream ”firing
"There were times where I felt like my life was over," she says of that difficult period.
Melissa Barrera reveals substantial job offers were slashed following her contentious exit from the Scream franchise.
The actress looked back on her unceremonious firing over comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war in conversation with The Independent, calling that period a difficult one. For one, work more or less dried up.
“It was quiet for like 10 months," said Barrera of the job offers. "I was still getting offers for small things here and there – I’m not going to lie and say there was nothing – but [the message] was, 'Oh, she probably doesn’t have work, she’ll say yes to anything.'"

"It was the darkest and hardest year of my life, and I had to reevaluate everything,” added the actress of that period. "There were times where I felt like my life was over.”

Barrera was dropped from the slasher sequel last year over social media posts in support of Palestine amidst the ongoing turmoil overseas. She called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel and accused Israeli forces of genocide and ethnic cleansing, which Spyglass Media Group — the company that produces the film franchise — construed as "anti-semitism."
Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in the franchise, in response condemned anti-semitism, stating that as a Latina, "I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need."
"Silence is not an option for me," she said.
Her onscreen sister, Jenna Ortega, exited the franchise soon after her departure due to reported scheduling conflicts with her Netflix hit series Wednesday. About four months after the debacle, franchise vet Neve Campbell — who notably opted out of Scream 6 due to a salary dispute — announced that she was set to return for Scream 7.

Barrera was asked by The Independent about the "factions" that were formed in response, referencing the fans who pledged to boycott the films due to her firing and fans who were loyal to Campbell.
"I think there have always been Scream factions,” Barrera responded with a laugh. “There are always going to be people that love you and people that hate you, and people that are open to a story continuing, and people that think that continuing it is ruining it. If they want to go watch the next one? Cool. If they don’t? Also cool.”
“You just gotta act according to how you preach,” added Barrera. “And that depends on what you value, what your morals are, and whether you can separate that from art or not. There are people who can’t listen to R. Kelly anymore, or Michael Jackson, or can’t watch Woody Allen films anymore. And then there are people who don’t care.”
