Mel Greig: Why I lost 10kgs and what I learnt

I recently lost 10kgs and before I embarked on my mission I had that number in mind, telling myself, ‘I WILL LOSE 10KGS.’ So when you truly set your mind to it and flick that switch you can become unstoppable.

I have been on this journey twice before and lost between 10-15kg but this is the first time I made sure to do one thing that ensured I get the best results, I put nothing naughty in my body for 10 weeks. That meant giving up a lot but I knew, that if I could stick to that I would get the best possible results.

No alcohol, no junk food, no refined sugar, no bad carbs . . . NOTHING NAUGHTY . . . I wouldn’t even sneak a hot chip from someone’s plate or have a sneaky lolly. It actually blew my mind that I was able to do that but more so, that I didn’t have any withdrawal symptoms . . . no headaches or cravings.

I ate 90% organic and clean and followed my trainer Tegan Haining’s diet guidelines but gave it my own touch which allowed me to not only follow it but also enjoy it for the full 10 weeks.

I was doing personal training for 3 days a week and 2 days of Pilates. Prior to this challenge I hadn’t tried Pilates before and had this preconception that it was just a stretching class – my goodness what a workout! And it’s something I’m now continuing to do, I love it.

A lot of Endometriosis sufferers have reached out to ask how I handled my condition because normally when I exercise I’ll get at least one flare up a week. But apart from a 2-day period with inflammation, I WAS FINE . . . and I put it down to the diet and eating organic. I was surprised, given the training was intense it should have flared up, BUT I had no other triggers for inflammation like wine and bad foods.

This still isn’t the skinniest I’ve been, but it’s the healthiest and fittest. I know what it’s like to be classed as ‘obese’ to have no energy and to struggle at the gym . . . when you work your ass off and don’t see the results straight away.

When you do your first session on the bike and can’t do it for longer than 30secs, when you need to lift your 87kg body in a step up and it’s so hard . . . yet you watch the fitness gurus online and they make it look so easy . . . that’s because we are lifting up double their weight.

Don’t give up on being healthy, don’t think that losing 10kgs is impossible because it’s not and I just proved that.

I started at 87kg and a size 16 . . . smashing a lot of wine with a bad diet. I took 10 weeks out of the precious 52 weeks a year we have, and I changed my life, I can’t begin to tell you the change mentally and physically I’ve had.

You deserve to be the best and healthiest version of you, commit yourself to 10 weeks and then bring back naughty things in moderation.

If you’re a mum, I understand this is even harder for you with time and food preparation, so this is when your family, friends and partner need to step in to help even more to ensure you can stay committed to changing your life . . . because they’ll benefit from that too.
