Meghan Markle Wore an Extremely Royal-Coded Piece of Jewelry to Prince Harry’s Invictus Games

The throughline is definitely there.

At the Invictus Games in Canada, Meghan Markle wore a signet ring that symbolized her marriage to husband Prince Harry—and her royal family ties.

Before Harry and Meghan stepped back as working members of the royal family in 2020, they often used their joint royal cypher following their royal wedding in May 2018. The cypher consisted of a combined “H” and “M” in cursive writing topped with a coronet with two cross pattées, four fleurs-de-lys, and two strawberry leaves, according to Hello!. The couple used it on their previous Sussex Royal website and Sussex Royal social media accounts and, according to The Daily Express, continued to use the logo until 2021 on their letterheads before replacing it with the logo for their nonprofit Archewell.

Now it seems the cypher is back, as Meghan was spotted at the Invictus Games this past week—on multiple occasions, to boot—wearing a gold signet ring on her pinky finger that appeared to have the cypher engraved on it, a definite nod to her marriage and also a sentimental nod to not just royal life but especially her father-in-law, King Charles, who famously wears a signet ring.

Royal fashion Instagram account, Royal Fashion Police, spotted the signet ring, as did fashion site What Meghan Wore and Instagram account royal_fashion_blog. Meghan wore the signet ring on her right pinky multiple times throughout her time in Canada, where she visited both Vancouver and Whistler alongside Prince Harry as the Games debuted winter sports for the first time.

What Meghan Wore noted that it had first been noticed last fall, but the site “never got a good look at it.” The ring is believed to have come from British jewelry brand Bentley & Skinner, which interestingly holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment, meaning it is a brand used by members of the royal family and, for lack of a better term, royally-approved.

Wearing signet rings is a very royal way to wear jewelry, particularly by King Charles but also by Princess Diana during her lifetime and Prince Edward, the King’s youngest brother. Edward’s wife Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh has also worn a gold ring on her pinky finger for years, according to Hello!, and their son James, Earl of Wessex debuted his own signet ring at the 2024 Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Charles gave a similar signet ring to Diana the night before their July 29, 1981 wedding, and according to biographer Andrew Morton’s book Diana: In Her Own Words, the late Princess of Wales said of Charles, “He sent me a very nice signet ring the night before to Clarence House, with the Prince of Wales feathers on and a very nice card that said, ‘I’m so proud of you, and when you come up, I’ll be there at the altar for you tomorrow. Just look ‘em in the eye and knock ‘em dead.’”

Diana wore the signet ring on several occasions, including to the Regent Street Christmas lights switch-on later in 1981.

Meghan is no stranger to sending messages through her clothing, specifically her jewelry. In December 2016, about five months into her relationship with Harry and not long after their romance became public, Meghan wore a Maya Brenner necklace with the initials “H” and “M” on a gold chain to, as What Meghan Wore put it, “confirm her and Harry’s romance to the world.” Maya Brenner also appeared at the Invictus Games this week in the form of a pair of diamond earrings from the brand that Meghan wore to a double date with Harry, singer Michael Bublé, and Bublé’s wife Luisana Lopilato; Meghan’s earrings were a Valentine’s Day gift from Harry last year.

In addition to the gold signet ring, Meghan also wore her diamond engagement ring, gold wedding band, and eternity ring while at the Invictus Games before flying home to kids Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in Montecito on February 11.
