Meghan Markle turns 37: A look back at her style evolution

Meghan Markle turns 37 on Saturday on August 4, and it’s her first birthday celebration since becoming a member of the royal family.

To say Meghan’s life has changed dramatically in the past 37 years is an understatement. Besides going from actress to duchess, throughout the past decade, Meghan’s style has changed extensively. As her career and relationship with Prince Harry flourished, so did the public’s curiosity with her, causing a phenomenon known as “The Meghan Markle Effect,” where products quickly sell out as soon as the duchess wears it. But Meghan was not always the fashionista we’ve come to know her today.

In the early oughts, Meghan began her career guest starring on shows like 90210 and CSI: NY. During this time, Meghan wore outfits that we would never see her in today.

In 2006, Meghan wore a very preppy look: blue jeans, a black top, a cropped jacket, and a multi-layered pearl necklace to an event. She wore her hair pulled back and carried a brown and white leather satchel. Between 2007-2010, Meghan opted for sexier red carpet looks that exposed her shoulders and legs. She often wore strapless, mini dresses that had flashy details like a metallic sheen.

In 2011, once Meghan landed her role as Rachel Zane in the hit show, Suits, her style matured. She transitioned to wearing more svelte red carpet looks like a black velvet peplum dress and a gorgeous crimson red A-line gown.

In 2017, once Meghan met Harry, her style became much more regal. However, with that, she became more conservative in her sartorial choices wearing long coats and dresses that covered her shoulders and chose dresses and skirts with low hemlines. Meghan often accessorised her looks with a British royal touch, wearing hats by acclaimed designer Philip Treacy (the go-to hat maker for the royal family).

Now in 2018, when Meghan officially became the Duchess of Sussex and celebrates her 37th birthday with Prince Harry and a new royal family by her side, some might say it’s her best year yet. After all, not every woman gets to have her wedding dress designed by Givenchy.

No longer is she the actress who sports mini party frocks on the red carpet, but a royal duchess who wears Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy, and Carolina Herrera on the reg.

Ahead, celebrate Meghan’s birthday by taking a trip down memory lane and see how her style evolved throughout the years from 2006 to the present day.
