They’ve shared a notoriously tricky relationship that saw Prince Harry take what many viewed as a thinly veiled stab at his dad Prince Charles last year, when he spoke out about why he shouldn’t have been made to walk behind his late mum Diana’s coffin as a child.
Now, with Prince Harry embarking on building on a family of his own with Meghan Markle, insiders say there’s been a noticeable change in the father-son dynamic, and it’s all down to Harry’s new wife.
Meghan, who is extremely close to her mum Doria Ragland, has apparently ordered Prince Harry to make peace with his dad, Prince Charles.
“She told Harry he was wonderful, welcoming, warm, hard-working kind and stable,” an insider told the Daily Mail.
“She made it clear that he should appreciate him and bond more.”
Prince Harry and his brother William were told of their mum’s tragic death in 1997 by their dad, with Harry admitting it was a tough situation for them all.
“[Our dad] was there for us — he was the one out of two left, and he tried to do his best and to make sure that we were protected and looked after,” Harry said in the BBC documentary Diana, 7 Days. “But he was going through the same grieving process as well.”
With Prince Charles later moving on with his romance with Camilla, insiders say that, along with the distance that came with royal duties, did little to help Harry’s interactions with his father.
“It is a slightly tricky relationship, because Charles has always been quite a remote figure, he has always been consumed by work,” royal expert Penny Junor told the Daily Beast.
“Even after Diana died, he still worked his socks off. He made sure they were well looked after, but they are not as close as they might have been.
“That’s not a product of a lack of love. It’s a product of the fact he is so focused on his work.”
That fractured family dynamic is something the former Suits star is determined to heal, especially after Prince Charles – who is said to adore Meghan – stepped in at the last minute to walk her down the aisle after her own father was unable to attend.
“There has been a wedding bonus for all the family: a sort of mega-watt warming effect,” the source told the Daily Mail.
