New ‘Meet the Parents’ Movie in the Works With Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Blythe Danner and Teri Polo Returning

Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner are in early talks to star in the next installment in the “Meet the Parents” franchise. Plot details for the fourth film in the series remain under wraps.

John Hamburg is set to write the screenplay. Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro will produce through Tribeca Productions. Jay Roach will produce through Delirious Media. Ben Stiller and John Lesher will produce through Red Hour Films. Executive vice president of production development Matt Reilly and director of production development Jacqueline Garrell will oversee the project for the studio.

“Meet the Parents” grossed over $330 million in the global box office, becoming the seventh highest grossing film globally in 2000. Its sequels “Meet the Fockers” and “Little Fockers” were also box office successes, culminating in a total franchise gross of over $1.13 billion in the global box office.

Variety reviewed the first film from 2000 positively, with Todd McCarthy writing, “Widening his range from the gag-oriented antics of the two ‘Austin Powers’ installments, director Jay Roach reveals a talent for more character-centered work here while also demonstrating outstanding timing and the ability to sustain a comic narrative at feature length. Of course, it helps to have a clever script that continues to wring surprises from a simple basic premise, as well as actors like Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller, who can milk their characters’ growing mutual animosity for all it’s worth.”

De Niro is represented by CAA and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. Stiller is represented by WME, ID and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Polo is represented by Gersh, McGowan Rodriguez Management, and Kraditor & Haber. Danner is represented by Anonymous Content. Hamburg is represented by WME and Sloss Eckhouse Dasti Haynes LawCo.

Deadline was first to report the news.
