Meet the Full Cast of 'The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras'

Over 26 years and 39 seasons, The Challenge has changed the game of what reality TV all-star shows can be. Originally a showdown between MTV series The Real World and Road Rules, the competition, stakes, and TV spectacle has grown instrumentally to become what cultural critic Bill Simmons once deemed the "fifth national sport." Throughout the past quarter of a century, we've seen epic physical showdowns in eliminations, millions of dollars in prizes given away, countless rivalries started, romances created and destroyed, and reality TV legends cemented.

It's only appropriate, then, that MTV chooses to honor the legacy of the longest-running reality series in the upcoming The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras. Premiering Wednesday, August 14, it will feature a whopping 40 competitors from seasons past, the largest cast in the show's history. The group spans "OGs" who have been there since the very beginning of the series, to players who made their debuts later and rose to become the best competitors in the show's history, to new-school competitors trying to claim their place in Challenge history. Thrown together, they'll all be competing for their share of the one-million-dollar prize at the end.

If you ask five different fans of The Challenge how they see "eras" of the series, and which one is their favorite, you'd get five different answers. And so Battle of the Eras aims to show which section of the show's history is the best. The 40 competitors are divided into four teams of 10, based on the season where they made their debut. It should be noted their team is determined by their first season, as one of the hallmarks of The Challenge is having players return multiple times, building friends and enemies along the way. However, while the cast announced by MTV is massive, it may not be for long.

As the network teases in a press release, "In the monumental 40th Season, The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras, the path to glory is far from easy, as they must first compete at the Era Invitational and eliminate the weakest links from within their own Challenge Era for only the best will earn a coveted spot on their team. With relentless, new challenges and twists, these seasoned Veterans are perpetually kept on their toes in the game they thought they had mastered." Considering this cast, no matter what the format, there is bound to be plenty of drama, hookups, and "headbangers" to continue the legacy of the series.

In addition to the season and cast, MTV announced various pieces of Challenge media. Leading up to the premiere, fans will get an exclusive sneak peek and hear from the cast during The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras: Countdown Begins launch special, airing Wednesday, August 7th at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. And, every Thursday after the episode, fans can tune into another season of MTV's Official Challenge Podcast, featuring in-depth recaps with first-hand anecdotes from the most recent episodes.

Can the old-school Challengers show they can still hang with the best? Will the middle-era "GOATs" cement that label with dominant performances? Or can the show's newest crop prove themselves to be the new faces of the franchise? Scroll down to see the full cast of 40 veterans. The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras premieres on Wednesday, August 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
