It’s the end of an era for McDonald’s McFlurry enthusiasts.

The fast food chain announced that they will get rid of their current ice cream dessert spoons and replace them with new ones, per statements obtained by CNN and CBS.

For many customers, the McFlurry spoon has been a point of confusion as some often mistake its hollow shape for a straw. Instead, it simply doubles as a spindle to funnel and mix in sweet toppings.

The new McFlurry utensil design will feature a “smaller black spoon that uses less plastic,” per a statement obtained by CNN. It is reportedly the same spoon that is currently served with their sundaes. The “small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste,” McDonald’s added in the statement.

The company's employees will use a reusable spindle that's cleaned after each McFlurry to replace the job of the old spoons.

This isn’t the first major change the burger giant has introduced this year. In September, McDonald’s announced plans to phase out self-serve drink stations from its restaurants in the U.S. by the end of 2032.

The company wants to ensure a uniform experience for customers and crew members across all ways of ordering, including McDelivery, the app, kiosk, drive-thru or inside the restaurant.

Fans of the Golden Arches shared their disapproving thoughts about the change on X (formerly known as Twitter). One user wrote, "Damn how else am I finna [sic] mix everything to my liking," referring to how customers like to blend different sodas together in one cup. Another simply posted, "Whyyyyy?????"

Some social media users pointed to the issue of refills. "How about the refills tho?" another user wrote on the app.

There have been menu changes lately, too. The McRib — a barbecue pork sandwich with thinly sliced onions and dill pickles — will make its return in November at select locations.

The McRib went on a “farewell tour” in November 2022 at various locations. “Enjoy our famous pork sandwich as if it’s your last,” the restaurant’s website read at the time.

But then in October, the company announced its return, again. (The McRib has been available on and off since its release in 1981.)

“It turns out not everyone was ready to say goodbye to the McRib after last year's Farewell Tour,” McDonald’s said in a press release.

The brand confirmed that the limited edition menu item will only be available in select stores, saying, “while it won't be available nationwide, some lucky fans may find their favorite elusive saucy sandwich at their local McDonald's restaurants this November.”
