The McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish Ordering Tricks We Wish We Knew About Sooner

The McDonald's Filet-O-Fish, introduced in the 1960s, features a breaded, fried fish fillet, usually made from white fish like pollock, served on a soft steamed bun. The sandwich is topped with tartar sauce and a slice of cheese, giving it a creamy and tangy flavor. It was originally created to cater to customers who avoid meat on Fridays, especially during Lent, but it has become a staple on the McDonald's menu.

This rather simple sandwich is a fan favorite and tasty as-is, but in our internet travels we've seen some next-level hacks to make the seafood sandwich even better. Try any of these three tips (or combine a few of them) to make your Filet-O-Fish fabulous.

We saw this one on TikTok, where fast food hacks pop up frequently. If you don't like tartar sauce, you can ask for Big Mac sauce, instead. That blew our minds!

Big Mac sauce is McDonald's signature creamy sauce used on the Big Mac burger, but we can see how it would go well with fish. The sauce is a mix of mayo, relish, mustard, vinegar and spices, and it has a distinct sweet and tangy flavor. It elevates the Big Mac burger, so we would love to taste it on the Filet-O-Fish.

You can also request to have your Filet-O-Fish plain and add nugget dipping sauces to it.

Speaking of condiments, what's better than pickles and mustard? We'd love to put them on a Filet-O-Fish- and you can! These changes don't cost you extra, and the substitutions are very simple to make. We can already taste the tangy, sour flavor of the pickles and mustard. I'd love to add some onions to it, too, and make it more like a burger, without the beef.

Fish and chips is a popular British dish, but it isn't hard to make it at McDonald's. You just have to order a basic Filet-O-Fish with fries. You can add ketchup, mustard, Big Mac sauce or leave the tartar sauce. In some McDonald's restaurants, the employees will put this together for you, but be prepared to make it yourself. All you have to do is arrange the fries on the sandwich, so it's one of the easiest upgrades we know.
