Gaetz, first elected in 2016 as a U.S. Representative for the state of Florida, resigned from the House on Nov. 13, after President-Elect Donald Trump tapped him to lead the Department of Justice.

But days later, as Democrats pushed for the release of a House Ethics Committee report into Gaetz, the former congressman proactively withdrew his name from consideration for the AG gig. (Gaetz has denied the allegations investigated by the Justice Department and HEC, including a claim that in 2017 he had sex with a woman when she was a minor.)

“While the momentum was strong, it was clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction other than the critical work for the Trump/Vance transition,” Gaetz posted to X on Nov. 21. “There is not time to waste on a needless protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as attorney general.”

Trump soon after chose Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, to be his U.S. Attorney General.
