Country music superstar Martina McBride knows a thing or two about second chances.

“I always say, you don’t have a career like mine without a lot of second chances. Second chances, third chances, fourth chances,” she told Country Living. “When I first came to Nashville, I made a demo tape and I took it around to every record company, and all of them said no. They passed. So, then I waited awhile and made a second recording, and I got picked up by RCA. So, in a way, that was a second chance, and I was lucky that I was able to stay here in town and keep working on it.”

Now Martina will be the one making the calls, along with her fellow judges, on the talent show Second Chance Stage. Executive-produced by Chip and Joanna Gaines and premiering on Max on Thanksgiving Day (November 28), the new reality competition series gives contestants a second chance at their big break after putting their dreams on pause.

“Life just sometimes gets in the way,” Martina explained. “We had people that had to stop pursuing their dream because they were taking care of an elderly parent, or they had an illness—lots and lots of different reasons. And Second Chance Stage gives them an opportunity to have a second chance at their dream.”

When asked about what it was like being a judge, Martina said. “I loved it, actually. It’s such a positive and uplifting show. Just being able to hear everybody’s story and experience that was so special.”

The heartwarming series features dancers, singers, comics, magicians, and more. “We had a jump rope group—I’ve never seen anything like that before. It was definitely a surprise and something that I haven’t seen on a lot of talent shows either,” Martina said. “And the magicians—I love magic, so it’s always fascinating to me to see a magician perform.”

A good show for the whole family to gather ’round and watch together, the first two episodes of Second Chance Stage are prime picks for your Thanksgiving watch list (along with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and your annual viewing of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, of course).

In fact, that’s exactly what Martina plans to do. “We are going to Thanksgiving dinner at my husband’s brother’s house, and we’re going to have a big gathering, and we will definitely be watching Second Chance Stage together. I’m excited.”

Beginning on November 28, two new episodes of Second Chance Stage will drop weekly on Max, with the finale premiering on December 19. Host Emmanuel Acho, a sports broadcaster and best-selling author, joins the all-star panel of judges, including Saturday Night Live’s Heidi Gardner, acclaimed stage and screen actor Taye Diggs, and Martina.
