Marlins player nearly falls on face, still manages to steal home vs. Mets

Stealing home is arguably the most exciting play in baseball, if not all of sports. Precious few players even attempt it, and a successful swipe is bound for highlight reels and social media.

And yet, the Miami Marlins and New York Mets found a way to make the play embarrassing for nearly all involved.

Should this even count as stealing home?

The fun started in the sixth inning of Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader between the Marlins and Mets. Up 2-0, Marlins center fielder Jon Berti walked to lead off the inning. And then he stole second. And then he stole third.

And then ... this happened:

That right there is a man breaking for home as the catcher throws the ball back, losing his balance to the point of running on all fours and still somehow scoring thanks to a fumbled play at the plate. Sometimes, it feels like this kind of stuff only happens against the Mets.

Another angle of the play makes it look even more ridiculous:

Berti actually made history on that play as well, as he became the first player in the Marlins’ young history to steal three bases in one inning.

At the end of the day, Berti’s steal was the lowlight of a miserable day for the Mets, who failed to score a single run in the 14 innings of their doubleheader. The loss dropped the Mets to 12-16, just a half-game ahead of the Washington Nationals for last place in the National League East.
