If you're often accused of looking 'grumpy' while simply zoning out, you may suffer from bitchy resting face.

The term, which reportedly originated in 2009, has been attributed to celebrities including Kristen Stewart and Rihanna, who both admit they suffer from the syndrome.

But a writer from Quartz says people who have bitchy resting face are actually better communicators - because they're so misunderstood, they often have a higher empathy factor.

"Women used to being constantly misunderstood focus more on the words someone says, rather than their tone, body cues, or facial expressions, ensuring a more effective flow of information between both parties," Rene Paulson writes.

She goes on to suggest that because those with RBF are constantly monitoring themselves, they have a heightened sense of self-awareness, and are therefore acutely aware of others emotions.

"Women confronted by a world that automatically attaches negative attributes to their non-smiling face must quickly learn how to communicate and also hone a finely-tuned awareness of both our own emotions and the emotions of those around us," says Paulson.
