If you started out strong, but your motivation is waning, it could be time to try a weight loss app.

A recent study by the University of Sydney tested 28 apps for their ability to assist weight management by logging food intake.

Noom Weight Loss Coach came in at number one, as the app most likely to change behaviour and assist weight loss. Australian app Control My Weight shared second place with Calorie Counter Pro.

While weight loss apps can be helpful, it’s worth doing your research before downloading. According to Juliana Chen, a dietician from the University of Sydney, not all apps are created equal.

“Make sure the app comes from a credible source, and that health professionals have been involved in developing it,” she said.

“We found that a large number of weight loss apps are developed by people with little scientific understanding of what would support weight loss.”

However, the right app can help you gain a better idea of the amount of food and kilojoules you are eating each day.
