8 Failsafe Tips To Get Some Sleep

According to the experts, we should all be getting between seven and nine hours sleep per night. If only it was that easy…

If you’re having trouble catching the recommended amount of zzz’s each night, try one (or all) of these eight tips for good sleep habits:

1. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, high-sugar and heavy meals in the lead up to bedtime.

2. Pack away all electronic devices an hour before bed and remove them from the bedroom. The blue screen inhibits the absorption of melatonin, which is needed to trigger sleep.

3. Establish a calm, relaxing bedtime routine with an aim of reducing stress.

4. Make your bed for sleep (and sex!) only. Laptops, mobile phones, TV and even book reading should be banned.

5. If you are a late-night snacker, opt for sleep-friendly foods like bananas, cherries, hummus and peanut butter. These foods contain tryptophan which has been linked to better sleep quality.

6. Assess the state of your bedroom and ensure it is well ventilated.

7. Try a magnesium supplement. It is the most powerful relaxation mineral, with natural muscle-relaxing properties to induce sleep.

8. If you aren’t asleep after 20 minutes, go into another room and do something relaxing (not involving screens) until you feel tired again.
