Can you guess which jobs might have the happiest employees? We’ll give you a hint: they don’t work in an office.

A new book by behavioural scentist Paul Dolan has investigated which careers make people the happiest, and the answers might surprise you, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Gardeners and florists top the list as the happiest of all vocations, with 87 per cent saying there are content in their roles. And although they might not earn as much as bankers, they are almost twice as happy. Bankers are the least happy in their jobs, with only 44 per cent job satisfaction.

After florists and gardeners come hairdressers and beauticians, plumbers, marketers and PR workers, scientists and leisure and tourism workers.

Doctors, dentists, lawyers, nurses and architects come in at the tail end of the top 10, and all have about 64 per cent job satisfaction.

And the jobs that give their employees the most grief? Bankers, IT and telecommunications workers, HR and personnel staff and caterers.

"If you are a florist, you have social interaction, you are seeing the fruits of your labour, and getting it quickly,” Dolan told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“That's in contrast to banking and lawyers, where it is unclear where you can get that feedback, and people are not probably very thankful for what you do."
